Three copper coins, or three coins of the same denomination.

The coins need not be expensive. What matters is that you treat them with care.

Before casting, decide which face is yang and which is yin.

A common convention: portrait side (heads, crest) = yang; numeric side = yin. You may reverse this, but do not change it mid-cast.

Before casting, sit still for a moment.

Incense is optional. What matters is the reverence.

Hold the three coins together in cupped palms.

Silently say your question once. Then once more.

Let the mind quiet. Only then begin.

Cup all three coins, shake them gently in front of your chest for three breaths.

Cast them onto a flat surface. Record the yang/yin combination. This is Line 1.

Cast again, record Line 2.

Repeat six times, recording Line 1 through Line 6 — bottom to top.
